Moray Pathways has launched its six-week summer programme offering young people the opportunity to try out bush craft skills, a community project, creative arts and have local employers visit the young people on site.
The partnership organisation supports young people in training, learning and work and is one of the first in the area to re-start face-to-face provision since lockdown.
The need for school leavers in Moray to be supported during the summer was identified by a survey of senior phase secondary pupils. The survey was designed by the schools and curriculum team and Skills Development Scotland.
Amy Cruickshank, Opportunities for All Officer with Moray Council, co-ordinator of Moray Pathways, explained: “It was clear from the survey results there was increase in the number of school leavers who may require additional support with their transition and beyond”.
Amy added: “At the time of planning the programme, we had no idea if we would be able to actually run with it due to covid-19 restrictions, but the risk paid off and we have had an overwhelming number of referrals.
“This echoes the national outlook that young people have been hugely, and often adversely, affected by the pandemic. Moray Pathways has been proactive in making sure there’s something in place to support them. Over the coming weeks, we’ll see 32 young people enjoy different activities.
“In order to be covid-19 compliant and keep young people and staff safe, our outdoor learning programme is ideal to help those taking part to learn crucial employability skills, such as communication skills and resilience.”
A number of partners from Moray Pathways offered support including; the Moray Council Youth Engagement Team; employability keyworkers; support staff from Moray College UHI and Moray Arts Development Engagement. We would also very grateful to the 1st Elgin Scout Group for allowing us to use their land and its facilities.
Many of the young people taking part have secured a college place in August with the summer programme will give them the opportunity to build up a relationship with staff before their course begins.
