Violence against Women and Girls in the Scottish Gypsy/Traveller Community

Join specialists from the Minority Carers of Ethnic People Project to learn about the impact of VAWG on the Scottish Traveller community

The Minority Ethnic Carers of People Project (MECOPP) have been engaged in essential work with Scotland’s minority communities for nearly three decades. They have always fore fronted collaboration and empowerment – nowhere more than in their work with Gypsy Travellers.

This little-understood population, historically persecuted and currently under-served receives little attention. This seminar, with the MECOPP Women’s Voices Development Worker, Shirell Johnson and Donna Lawrie, the Family Mental Health Development Worker & Team Lead, will undo some of that neglect.

Donna and Shirell have been engaged in extensive support and advocacy work with and for the Gypsy Traveller community in recent years in addition to overseeing the co-production of resources intended for women and girls in the community experiencing gender-based violence.

This session will explore the history of the Gypsy Traveller community in Scotland, it’s treatment by the majority and the implications thereof for effective engagement. It will then move to focus on the dynamics of violence against women and girls and how we can – competently and confidently – support Gypsy Traveller survivors.

Places are free, unlimited and anyone with an interest in providing culturally-sensitive support to Gypsy Traveller VAWG survivors is welcome to attend.
